National Association of Special School Principals (NASSP) Launches to Advocate for Equity and Representation in Special Education
Dublin, Ireland - February 26, 2024 - The inaugural launch event of the National Association of Special School Principals (NASSP) took place on February 22, 2024, at Buswells Hotel in Dublin. The event was met with overwhelming support from dedicated special school principals, key stakeholders in the education system, and elected representatives, reflecting a unified commitment to championing the rights and needs of special schools across Ireland.
During the launch event, attendees were introduced to the newly formed NASSP committee, which is poised to spearhead efforts aimed at fostering collaboration, advocating for equitable policies, and ensuring the voices of Special School Principals are heard at every level of decision-making within the education sector.
The event featured insightful addresses from esteemed speakers, providing a comprehensive overview of NASSP's vision, mission, values, and strategic objectives:
- "Who Are We" by Ann Higgins: Ann Higgins elucidated NASSP's identity and its pivotal role in representing the diverse interests of Special School Principals across the country.
- "Why Have We Formed" by Anne Hartnett: Anne Hartnett underscored the imperative behind the formation of NASSP, emphasising the pressing need for a unified platform to advocate for the rights and needs of Special School Principals.
- "Legal Considerations" by Anna Lombard Perito: Anna Lombard Perito provided crucial insights into the legal landscape impacting the establishment of NASSP and outlined strategies to navigate legal considerations effectively.
- "Where Next for NASSP" by Matt Swain: Matt Swain outlined NASSP's strategic direction and underscored the organisation's commitment to effecting positive change within the special education sector.
VISION STATEMENT: NASSP aspires to be seen, heard, and to deliver for all Special School Principals, ensuring their voices are amplified and their needs are met with urgency and efficacy.
MISSION STATEMENT: NASSP is dedicated to advocating for and representing ALL Special School Principals, fostering collaboration, and championing equitable policies within the education sector.
VALUES: NASSP values the expertise and collegiality of its members, striving for equity, mutual respect, and integrity in all endeavors.
STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES:
- To be recognized and included by the Department of Education as a representative body of the Special School sector in all decision-making affecting Special Schools.
- To influence Special Education policy through proactive engagement and advocacy.
- To harness the expertise of all Special School Principals to effect meaningful change and foster continuous improvement.
- To be recognized as a stand-alone sector within the Education sector, ensuring the unique needs of special schools are addressed effectively.
NASSP looks forward to collaborating with education stakeholders to develop bespoke solutions that cater to the diverse needs of special schools, ensuring every student receives the support and resources necessary to thrive academically and socially.
